Lead in floor dust can be an indication of house contamination with lead. If you were diagnosed with lead poisoning, test you house first, your indoor dust may be the source. Your sample will be tested by a CALA accredited laboratory in Ontario, Canada using acid digestion and Ionized Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. The test results will be sent to you by email.

There is no law or guideline in Canada, that would specify acceptable limit for Lead in floor dust.  Review of available scientific literature gives  the the following threshold levels for Lead, which are provided as a reference only.

70 mg/kg – recommended threshold level of Lead in agricultural soil in Canada

140 mg/kg – recommended level of Lead in soil in Canadian parks

250 mg/kg – 90% of houses in Canada have lead concentration below this level

400 mg/kg – EPA limit for Lead in soil on children’s playground in US.

To test your indoor dust, take a full tablespoon of dust from your vacuum cleaner and place it into a Ziploc bag. Do not mix dust from different rooms in one bag. Please make sure you check the sampling and shipping instructions below.

Lead is toxic if it is inhaled or digested. Please protect yourself and your family. Simply select number of samples that you want to test, and place your order. If you have any questions, please email us at your convenience

Remove old dust from a vacuum cleaner. Use the vacuum cleaner to collect fresh dust from the room, which you want to test for Lead in dust. Unplug the vacuum cleaner, extract a tablespoon of dust from the collector, and place it in a Ziploc bag. Close the bag, and label it with a permanent marker: “dust from kitchen floor”, or “carpet dust from basement”. If you want to test more than one sample, each sample should be placed in a separate bag. Please take as many samples as you need, label each bag. Count number of samples, and select corresponding number of tests.

Once the package with your samples is ready, please:

  1. Print the payment receipt for your order. If you do not have a printer, please give us your order number, name, email, and phone number we will match it with our record of your order.
  2. Download and complete a request form, where specify what test you need
  3. Place the printed receipt (or your order #) into the box/envelope with your samples
  4. Send or deliver the samples and the paperwork to our laboratory

When you take a sample, presume the worst and protect yourself from lead dust. To be safe and “just in case”, you should wear N100 or P100 dust mask and wash hands after the sampling.
