Fibre Count Test (PCM)- Equipment Rental and Laboratory Analysis

$220.00$340.00

Description: This Total Fiber Count test by Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) includes everything needed for accurate air sampling to confirm a safe, asbestos-free environment after abatement. The kit comes with PCM air sampling cassettes, a sampling pump, and detailed instructions for proper sampling.

After sampling, please return the cassettes and pump to our laboratory in London, Ontario, Canada, within one month of your order date for calibration and analysis. We use the NIOSH 7400 standard method, the same procedure used by professional asbestos abatement companies. Each room typically requires 2-3 hours for air sampling. Please note that you will be using industrial-grade equipment, that produces significant noise, can be hot by touch, and cannot be left unattended.

In the laboratory, we measure the Total Concentration of All Fibres (both asbestos and non-asbestos) using Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM). The results are reported as the fibre concentration in the air. If the total fibre concentration is below 0.010 fibres per cubic centimetre (ff/cc), which is the regulatory limit for asbestos fibres—the air is considered safe.

The package price includes a one-month equipment rental, laboratory analysis, and a detailed report. Return shipping costs are not included; please refer to the shipping tab for more information. Standard turnaround time is 10 business days, with expedited options available upon request.

Description

Your report will detail the fibre concentration in air (ff/cc), with the following reference values to help you assess air quality:

  • 0.002 ff/cc or less: Fiber concentration in the top 50% of cleanest homes tested by our laboratory.
  • 0.009 ff/cc or less: Fiber concentration in the top 90% of homes, meaning only 10% of homes tested have higher levels.
  • 0.010 ff/cc: Maximum allowable concentration of asbestos fibres post-abatement.
  • 0.100 ff/cc: Maximum allowable concentration of asbestos fibres during renovation or work involving asbestos.

For any questions, please contact us via email.

Your sampling kit includes several sampling PCM cassettes to capture fibers from the air and an air sampling pump. The step-by-step procedure can be seen here.  Typically, it takes 2.5-3 hours to collect a sample.

After you collect all the samples please:

  1. Complete the “Request for Analysis Form” , and get it ready for shipping with the samples
  2. Send or deliver the samples and the paperwork to our laboratory (return shipping cost is not included in this order)

When you collect the air sample, presume the worst and protect yourself from asbestos. Asbestos is the most toxic when you inhale it. To be safe and “just in case”, you should wear N100 or P100 dust mask.
